I think I said this for 10 years now: IT organizations are not static groups of people and systems. They mature about new problems in a cyclical way. Whatever solution you are trying to sell, you must understand at what point the org is mature enough to listen and see the value.

@_msw_ rPath was such a great idea, light years ahead of its time. But it’s hard to see the value of a solution for a problem you are not ready to solve.

We like to quote Deming with “Without data, you’re just another person with an opinion”, but the truth is that two people can look at the same identical data and come up with two completely different interpretations.

@r0bsterry @joevaccaro Side note, yes, but enormously important. Way too many companies and hiring managers don’t pay any attention to how much pride an employee can take in her job title. People are not just moved by money. Some want recognition.

Promise a depressing job title and they will NOT come.

@joevaccaro Perhaps even more importantly, people don’t think “I’m up against a poorly designed #AI model.” They think “I’m not good enough for company X”.

This disintegrates self-confidence and closes doors to lots of opportunities in the future (with that company and with tangent ones).

@joevaccaro I think that your point has more to do with the legal protections in place than with sunk costs. The problem here, tho, is that even with a better mechanism to let go “wrong” hires, the “right” hires remain out because of the selection criteria.

I focused the first part of my career on cybersecurity. That showed me the attitude towards risk mitigation in some of the largest organizations in the world. That experience is now invaluable to understand the mindset driving mono/multi-cloud attitude that exists today.
