The performance of a business unit in a large IT vendor doesn’t depend just on the quality of the products it develops. It depends on the credibilty its leadership has earned with the sales org. If Sales doesn’t trust the VP of the BU, the PMs, etc. they will boycott sales.

The VP of a BU might surround him/herself with a bunch of yes people that will agree with everything is said and done because they fear losing their jobs or want a promotion. But the Sales organization has no such obligations and will punish untrustworthy VPs with no sales.

Sales people are amazing at figuring out the BS-tters at record time. And they talk to each other. If BU leaders lie, don’t show they have a credible strategy, or don’t listen to feedback, Sales teams will not sell. Especially if they have alternative products to offer.

One of the reasons why people don’t train (smaller) LLMs long enough is that, somewhere in the company, there’s a PM or a marketing manager that knows nothing about AI and insists on releasing product X by an arbitrary date.

Trust people that actually try AI models & systems. Not the ones that just regurgitate something written in an academic paper or on a press article.

There’s a huge difference between what AI can do & how hard is to do it vs what people write it can do it & how easy is to do it.
