@mattliebowitz @gunnarwb You can achieve the same with multiple identities. I had 5 identities in Vivaldi before the experiment that brought me to Firefox.

What really make the difference is that Firefox is available on iOS, so you can sync open tabs and bookmarks. Vivaldi, not yet.

@gunnarwb I still have Vivaldi (which uses Chromium as engine) installed, yet the problem has disappeared.

I suspect you could have Vivaldi (so, essentially, Chrome) without Chrome and without the problem.

At the time of writing, I have Firefox open with 44 tabs across 4 windows. It often goes all the way to 60. Not a single sound comes out of the machine.

Ironically, I switched from Vivaldi to Firefox in 1 experiment to lower resource consumption. But it didn’t make a difference.

I have a MBP 2018 15″ w 16GB Ram. For what I do, it’s powerful. Yet, no matter what, every day I had high CPU % (WindowServer) + fan spinning. I tried *everything*. Then I read this article. I refused to believe it. After 1 month, I can confirm it’s true.

@mlbiam I worked with many, many vendors in these 20 years. I won’t get into the mechanics of why, but I have enough data to say that it does not work.

And the rare times it “works”, it has nothing to do with the fact that you named it first.

Not only it generates confusion at expenses of the customers we are supposed to serve, but it’s also a strategy that does NOT work.

I just read “PlatformOps”. It’d be easy to make a sarcastic comment. I made many. Instead, for a change, I’d like to make a serious one:

It’s not in the customer best interest to keep doing this. We, as vendors, should stop playing the naming game in the attempt to own a space.
