3/ Of course, a similar approach to research is orders of magnitude more complex, both for the analyst to deliver and for the customer to consume. But if the question is “How do I solve problem X?”, I’m convinced it’s a more useful answer than the current one.

2/ The label surely provides guidance, but human ingenuity is about adapting tools for the job, not jobs for the tool. Product categorizations simply don’t reflect how IT organizations try to solve their problems. Thus, it leads to blind spots.

1/ There are some things I’d do differently if I were an analyst today (I was one 7+ years ago). One of them is fighting against the habit of segmenting the market by product categories. People compare tools based on the outcome, not the label a vendor or an analyst has decided.
