1/ When periodically reassessing an initiative, the people involved should ask “Are we still doing this because it’s worth it and is progressing us towards the goal we were set to achieve? Or because we know what to do and it’s easy to keep doing it?

3/ Instead, a killed initiative should be welcomed and cherished as an opportunity to free up valuable resources to work on something more impactful for the business. Fearing the implications, no employee that needs his/her salary would do that. So busywork and meeting walls.

2/ Of course, the corporate culture doesn’t incentivize this behaviour. A killed initiative might lead to a resizing of the team (hence less political power), reassignments, redundancies. And so we have the exact opposite: many zombie initiatives supported by lots of hand-waving.

One day we’ll look at passwords and VPNs as absurd sources of friction that we didn’t fix for a very long time because who thrives in and promotes complexity has been in the driving seat for way too long.
