I am starting to believe that, to succeed long term, a #CIO (and his/her direct reports) must build a program to systematically, heavily, and publicly influence vendors, press, analysts.

Letting vendors control the conversation only wastes everybody’s time.

Not only because in absence of clear indications, vendors misinterpret market demand, but also because #CIO success depends on vendors’ capability to deliver exactly what’s needed. At customer conditions, not vendor conditions.

I observed the online presence of overly busy CIOs for some time now. In most cases, their enormous potential to influence vendors remain completely untapped.

A #CIO can and should speak louder and more often about what is needed and not delivered in IT.

Given the mistakes of the past, I think it’s time to be a bit more demanding.

I’m also extremely concerned about the definition given to the label “AI Ops”. Very little #AI in that definition and this will end up like “private cloud computing”: a set of way-too-generous criteria that will allow too many companies to claim something they don’t actually do.
