Just last week, I wrote about the stubborn insistence in the IT industry to build general purpose tools/platforms and how that plan almost always fails long term (at least in my experience). CPU current trends provide another great example.

On Frictionless IT: you should try to pay for an online purchase with @Apple Pay. Nothing to do except doubletapping a button and scan ID.
Apple managed to implement it even more conveniently than a password manager with autofill (which is intimidating and complicated for many).

This is a point I’ve seen ignored over and over and over in my 20y of career. By product management, marketing, exex leaders. > “From now on, your customers know more than you do about your competitors.” – This is Marketing: You Can’t Be Seen Until You Learn To See (Seth Godin)

How many times your marketing people visit customers? Not just product marketing but corporate marketing, too. And not alone, but alongside PMs and engineers.

If your marketing people know your customers through once a year focus groups, they are building a brand in a vacuum.

6/ No matter how many times this approach has (spectacularly) failed, the reason why (most of) the IT industry insists on building general-purpose tools w/o use-case specific accessories is that it’s easier and requires less competence and empathy on the needs of the end-user org

5/ Then, when the #CIO complains that the general-purpose tool doesn’t return quick enough on the investment and sales plummet, the blame falls on the salesforce who was not convincing enough and not on who has built the tool in the first place.

4/ Unlike a Dyson, these general-purpose tools don’t come with a set of accessories to address various use cases and the onus of creating them is on the #CIO, who already struggles to integrate the tool with the existing environment.
