For years, I warned that, as soon as the gen Z and future generations enter the workplace, there will be a tectonic shift in products and technology adoption.

My plea was/is for vendors to reconfigure and stay building a frictionless IT.

A reckoning is coming.

1/ Years ago, on Facebook, I dared to predict that the iPhone would kill DSLRs. It was before computational photography.

My connections there quickly banded together to explain to me how wrong I was.

3/ If you are one of those friends (I stopped using Facebook 2+ years ago):

2/ Fast-forward a few years, as DSLRs sales were declining dramatically, I presented some charts as a follow up. The same group came back united and proceeded to explain to me that DSLRs will always have a marker.

2/ Two completely different implementations of the same solution can find equal support among the users because each appeals to a specific type of brain and fits better the worldview of a specific group of people. In the IT industry, all of this is completely ignored.

1/ Starting from primary school, we are indoctrinated to think that there’s one solution for any given problem. The right way to do it. That, of course, is not true. And critically, it discards the fact that different brains work in different ways and prefer different approaches.

3/ There are exceptions, of course. For a brief period, a solution might become dominant and used by the majority of the market. But that is a short-term, transitory phase, and it’s never absolute anyway. Soon an alternative approach emerges and the market adoption splits again.

4/ Yet, not only do we see competitors as an enemy that must be eliminated, but we also design, develop, and sell products for absolute dominance, assuming that only one solution can emerge as the ultimate answer to any given problem. Again, none of this matches reality.
