1/ This new announcement from @awscloud gives me the excuse to say something I wanted to say for a very, very long time: Amazon has won the cloud management platform game.

This probably deserves a very long post, but this is the short version:

@awscloud 2/ In the last 9y, I carefully watched what every market player was doing in my areas of interest. And, as part of that, I’ve been probably the keenest observer of AWS among the people in my organization.

@awscloud 3/ During that period, I’ve seen AWS building and refining Systems Manager into the most complete, powerful, and integrated cloud management platform (CMP) on the market.

And this while, one by one, every non-cloud vendor disappeared into oblivion…

@awscloud 4/ …and AWS competitors didn’t even try to build a proper management plane for their clouds.

You see, at some point in time in my career, I was an expert in cloud management platforms. I’d discuss this class of software at least 300 times a year with the biggest enterprise…

@awscloud 5/ …IT organizations in the world during my tenure at Gartner.

So, it’s with some confidence that I can say that AWS has built a phenomenal product and has continued to add capabilities even when there was no real competitive pressure.

@awscloud 6/ Systems Manager started as a basic control plane but, thanks to hundreds of small and huge upgrades, ended up being a critical asset in the AWS portfolio, delivering immense business value to Amazon customers.

@awscloud 7/ I don’t know anybody in the team that built Systems Manager in @awscloud. If you know any of them, please share this post and my most sincere congratulations.
