5/ The atomic subscription model would be a more financially rewarding, design-wise cleaner, and privacy-wise safer alternative to ads.

Yet, as much as I like it, I don’t think atomic subscription is a sustainable model in the long term for most people.

4/ I’d love for this model to work. I was one of the pioneers of professional blogging 16 years ago and, should I ever do it again, I’d never rerun it with the same advertising model.

3/ And what happens along the way, as you discover more interesting writers and apps?

You either restrict your world view and your productivity to what your budget allows or they start lowering their price.

2/ But what happens when you want to follow 20 of them, and each asks for $10 / month subscription? And you also have 20 apps on your computer/smartphone that cost $10 / month each.

1/ I continue to be very sceptical about the future of what I call “atomic subscriptions” in the consumer space. More than ever, high profile journalists are migrating to paid newsletter platforms like Substack, which is great.
