The #NoOps topic is vast, confusing, and populated by misguided hopes, so I thought I’d write something about it. I didn’t mention any specific company or solution that addresses my points, keeping the conversation vendor-neutral.

To enterprising software engineers out there: pls make a desktop app (for macOS, to start with) that intercepts my download and, through #AI, automatically changes the title of the saved file in a way that is meaningful. It’s almost 2021 and we still have to manually rename PDFs.

When I started using Internet, IRC and chat rooms were already becoming out of fashion, replaced by instant messaging platforms like ICQ (my first one). Today they are worth $27.7 billion dollars.

Yet, at no time Slack managed to replace email. It only increased it traffic.

The time humans spend on inventing and building tools is astonishing, to the point that they become a distraction from the outcome. The more intelligent the tools, the more time we have to think about higher level ideas. Building tools can’t be the main aspiration of our species.

Everybody is announcing custom-built chips these days. The alternative to a de facto industry standard that doesn’t allow you to differentiate (or has become a bottleneck) is to control your whole stack. Including the HW.

A customer recently asked about #NoOps. After the meeting, I ended up writing an 8,300 words vendor-neutral blog post about #Automaton, Infrastructure-as-Code, Observability, #AI, #Cybersecurity, and a few other topics.

Terribly outdated in some regards (for example, about #AI), yet timeless in others. The most fascinating thing to do while you read it? Comparing what were the author’s predictions and expected timelines (the book was published in 2008) with what actually happened in the next 12y https://t.co/x2Y3KLfcF8

I wrote a 20 pages (8,300 words) blog post. As usual, @Grammarly was invaluable and I cannot recommend enough the premium subscription. However, with a document of that size their web editor was quite unstable and crashed multiple times. I had to constantly copy & paste in GDocs.

I don’t know if I have ever revealed this but during the 7 years I run https://t.co/BoMpGhNroI, I reached 7+ million visitors / year without sending out a single promotional email to acquire new readers. Not one.

It is possible to build a great audience without spamming people.
